Internationally Educated Teachers Certificate Co-op Program
The Emery Adult Learning Centre has a co-operative education program where internationally educated and trained teachers enter the work force on a volunteer basis in order to gain some valuable Canadian work experience. Tuesdays through Fridays, the students will be in an elementary or secondary school working with a teacher mentor. As part of this experience, the student will be provideed opportunities to:
- be in the classroom assisting their teacher mentor
- work with students individually and/or in small groups
- plan, and eventually, teach lessons
- mark student work
- attend staff meetings
- become involved in extra-curricular activities, where possible
- become familiar with Ministry of Education policies, procedures and documents
The successful Canadian work experience thus gives internationally educated teachers a chance to become competitive potential teaching candidates. On Mondays, students must be in school at Emery studying many topics such as:
- Assessment and evaluation
- Understanding curriculum documents
- Job search and career planning
- Terminology used in education
- Computerized grading program
- Child development and learning styles
- Special education regulations and responsibilities
- English as a Second Language learners
- Classroom management strategies
This program begins in September and February and lasts 5 months.
