English
as a Second Language
 |
ESL
courses assist students whose first
language is not English to learn the
language of instruction. Depending on
the results of the initial language
assessment, students may be placed in
levels ranging from B to E (see pathway
chart). |
No two levels should be taken concurrently.
Learning a new language is a lengthy process
(years) and it can not be sped up by taking
more than one ESL
course at a time. Each level builds on the
skills of the previous one, so there are
no short cuts. The only course that can
be taken at the same time as the ESL
courses on the pathway is EPS3O
(speaking and presentation). Students are
encouraged to take courses in computers,
math and science in addition to their ESL
classes in order to practice their language
skills in real settings.
