From the first day I set foot in Emery I was pleasantly
greeted by a fresh mist of air named Mary. I was
already in the post-secondary system. However,
I had from a change of heart. Although I felt
a lot of shame and reserve, I was eagerly reassured
by the pleasant woman smiling back at me that
everything was going to be okay. From that moment
onward I felt at ease, because very few places
make any one feel comfortable in this day and
age.
Looking
back I think that my decision to attend Emery
was an excellent one.After,
all my frequent visits to the guidance office
(specifically in the left corner office) where
the door is always open and inspiration always
accumulating, I would never look back!

I am a student at
Emery Adult Learning Centre in Toronto. I am taking more courses than
I need to improve my skills in English and writing. As well, I need to
continue my education at college because I have good dreams for the future.
My goal is to study tool and die making in one of the best colleges next
September, so I need to have strong English skills. Fortunately, I study
in one of the best high schools in this city called Emery Adult Learning
Centre.
Emery has good counselors who advise the students how
to find and choose the subjects they must have to study to have a good
future. They advised me to study tool and die because I am better in math
and design, so I am grateful for their advice.

My name is Rizwan. I am a student at Emery Adult Learning
Centre. I took the following subjects: English, Mathematics Senior Level,
and Computer Science.
I took these courses to upgrade my communication skills and computer skills.
Without good communication skills and computer skills I couldn’t
succeed to get a job or to further my education. Joblessness is a burden
on the Canadian economy. Therefore, I am studying one or two years at
Emery.
My long term goal is to get a computer diploma or a degree from university,
and become a computer programmer.

In the future, I would like to take a nursing program
that is continuing the education from my country. I am interested in studying
this program. I think, with the help of Emery and the great teachers,
I will learn the essential information that I need to start college. Of
course, I will continue to strive to meet and surpass the expectations
of those courses.

My name is Mina. I am a student at Emery Adult Learning

to Computers. I intend to finish grade 12 English, and I am going to take
some mathematics and science classes too. After I finish these courses,
I will apply for college. My goal for the future is to be a pharmacist
and, hopefully, have my own pharmacy. Emery is the only place that prepares
me for college. There are different kinds of courses, good and experienced
teachers are available. I started coming to this school in September and
I have learned more than I expected. My English has improved, and I have
learned computer. Also before taking writing class, my writing was very
poor, and now it is getting much better.
I talked to people who speak English as their second language.
Some of them are just sitting at home and doing housework. I want them
to come to school as soon as they can, and try to learn something. It
would be good for you and for your children. You could solve their problems
too. In future, you can work and you will be proud of yourself. Time is
passing, why don’t you use it?

am taking these subjects because I want to improve myself. I have taken

two credits for these subjects. I would like to finish high school here
at Emery and get my high school diploma. After graduating, I would like
to get a job as a receptionist.
Here at Emery I am learning lots of new things. The teacher
in my writing class is a very good teacher who has lots of patience. He
is a good teacher for students to be around. Emery Adult Learning Centre
is a fun place to learn.

highly qualified teachers. I feel proud to be a part of this school. This
school gives me good opportunities for my future, and helps me to progress
towards my goals.
I came to Canada one year ago as a landed immigrant. I
was studying for a B.SC. (Bachelor of Computer Science) but my goal was
to be a soldier or police officer to serve my country. I applied to the
army back home. I didn’t have any suitable references but I qualified
for this job, so they deferred me and asked me to try next time. I know
there is a lot of corruption and I would not get this job because I don’t
have any references. Then I immigrated to Canada and came here. Now I
think this is my country and I want to serve my country as a police officer
or an army officer. They need graduates from high school. Emery Adult
Learning Centre and the great teachers will help me to get my high school
diploma and make my dream come true. When I entered Emery Adult Learning
Centre, the consultant gave me ESL subjects, but I thought I should be
in higher level because I had been studying English since I was child.
I was wrong. When I joined the ESL class I saw myself in the middle of
the class. Now, with the help of my teachers, I have improved my English
a lot. Students’ services at EALC help a lot to students with their
future plan. For newcomers to Canada, I think that we need help to show
us the right path for our goals.
I will take the essential subjects that I need to get
a job in the police force or in the army. Of course, I will continue to
strive to meet and surpass my goals.

different skills and training programs. Emery is a community which joins
people from different parts of the world and gives these people an opportunity
to study. Studying is very important for me because it is a good way to
make dreams come true. My greatest accomplishment will be to obtain a
diploma as a teacher and find a good job to help newcomers to Canada who
have a language barrier.

my English level and most jobs need computer skills. I’m planning
to take math, accounting, biology, chemistry, and physics because I did
not finish these courses in my country. These are very useful for the
future.
My goal for the future is to get a university degree:
I will have to work hard, but the problem is English. The Emery Adult
Learning Centre helps me to improve my language. If I studied with a private

Despite the fact that I studied English and math in my
country, I have to take these classes again because it has been a while
since I left school. This will help me to upgrade my writing and communication
methods.
Emery Adult Learning Centre is helping me in that, since I left school
some years ago, coming back to class at this level, will help me refresh
my memory of many things I have forgotten. It is also helping me to get
a standard required by many colleges and universities in Canada. Learning
at Emery Adult Learning Center is free compared to other schools where
you would pay money to acquire these skills.

Even if I was an intelligent person in my country, I was like a child

My Days at Emery Adult Learning Centre
As an immigrant coming from another country with a different
system, settling into the Canadian system wasn’t easy. It was all
frustrations and confusion, as I could not understand why my education
qualifications from my country were not being recognized. No one could
explain to me what I needed to do, and how to go about it, in order to
improve my standard of education until I came to Emery.
I was so close to giving up my hopes of ever improving
my education and securing a good job. The universities and colleges where
telling me a different story about getting more credits until I saw a
pamphlet from Emery Adult Learning Centre. I enrolled there and since
then my whole life has changed as there is now a torch at the end of my
tunnel.
The teachers at Emery are wonderful and amazing because
of the amount of patience they have for other students and me. We have
student counselors who help us to choose subjects according to our career
paths. They understand the frustrations we are going through and help
us to cope with them. They encourage us by telling us that if we endure
and persevere we will make it at the end, for they have seen it happening
to other students, who have gone through the same path.
Learning is not an easy process especially after so many
years out of school. It is intense and needs a lot of comprehending, thinking
and critical analysis. But as one who has been helped to focus by these
motivating teachers, I find it challenging and interesting at the same
time.
Emery Adult Learning Centre has helped me a lot. I am
now applying to different universities and colleges for my teaching or
social work career with hope and confidence, as I know that I now have
the requirements to qualify. Thanks to the whole of Emery Adult Learning
Centre staff who have always been a pillar of strength and encouragement.
